Representative John Schertz asked the House Judiciary and Rules Committee to introduce RS33000, a proposed Article V call limited to setting term limits for members of the U.S. House and Senate. "This call is limited to one thing and one thing only, to set term limits for members of the House of Representatives of the United States and members of the United States Senate," Schertz told the committee during the introduction.
Schertz said the draft tracks language used in other states and is designed to secure enough state approvals to prompt Congress to propose a term-limits amendment. He said the measure is narrower than some prior proposals because it focuses the Article V call solely on term limits rather than opening a broader convention.
The committee then moved to introduce RS33000. The chair called a roll, and the introduction passed 11 to 4. The roll-call as read in the record recorded votes in favor from Chairman Bruce Scogg, Vice Chair Alfieri, Representatives Ehart, Erickson, Garner, Handy, Polhonka, Schertz, Stone, Gannon and Mathias; Representatives Scott, Hawkins, Hostetler and Rubel were recorded as opposing. The chair instructed sponsors to attach required paperwork for formal filing.
RS33000 will be scheduled for subsequent committee work and public hearing as required by the committee schedule.
