La Grande School District No. 1 Superintendent George Mendoza told the board Feb. 11 that the district needs to reduce spending by about $1.2 million and will pursue that reduction primarily through natural attrition rather than layoffs.
Mendoza highlighted that La Grande High School continues to exceed the state average in four‑year graduation and five‑year completer rates and “expressed his gratitude for our school counselors.” Business Director Melissa Reagan told the board that finances are "trending as expected" and that the State School Fund is not expected to be reduced this fiscal year; the business office is already working on the 2026–2027 budget.
Board members did not take a formal budget-cutting vote at the meeting; Mendoza said the district will continue to advocate for state funding while implementing staffing reductions through attrition.
