NC Forest Service asks Yadkin County for $100,877 to support fire protection, nursery and outreach

John Kessler of the NC Forest Service presented the agency's FY2027 funding request and summarized recent activity in Yadkin County. He said the service requests $100,877 from the county (the county's share in a state/county cost split) to fund fire protection, forest-management planning, tree-planting nursery services and outreach to schools and fire departments. "In 2024-2025, there were approximately 42 wildfires in the County that burned approximately 17.73 acres," Kessler said, adding that crews protected structures valued at almost $7 million and documented one structure loss valued at $24,700.
Kessler also outlined ongoing program work including issuing forest-management plans to landowners (charged $5 per acre for plans), prescribed-burn assistance, logging inspections and educational programs (27 programs conducted last year). He asked the Board to consider the FY27 request, noting the current year's higher request had included a new truck and that FY27 request is lower as that vehicle expense is not repeated.
