County approves HVAC replacements and funds school fire alarm upgrade

Yadkin County commissioners on April 20 approved multiple facilities contracts to address failing HVAC and fire-safety equipment. The board accepted a Dorsett Heating & Air Conditioning quote of $127,818 to replace a 30-ton rooftop HVAC unit at the Yadkin County Medical Campus and approved $8,460 to replace a failing HVAC unit at the EMS Outpost on Smithtown Road.
Superintendent Davis told the board that West Yadkin Elementary's fire alarm panel, installed decades ago, is failing and spare parts are no longer available; the board agreed to provide up to $30,908.76 for Cross Connect to replace the system. "It is limping along right now and they are doing weekly checks on it to make sure it is still safe to occupy the building," Davis said. The Fire Marshal has assisted the school system with occupancy checks while the replacement is scheduled.
Board members discussed refrigerant (R-22) costs—currently about $1,600 per unit to recharge—and the age of the rooftop unit (installed 1987) that serves shelterable areas in the Medical Campus. The board approved the Dorsett contracts and the school funding in separate motions.
