Council declares March 19 ‘Catherine DeGrina Appreciation Day’ after 43 years of dispatch service

The Barre City Council unanimously approved Resolution 2026-03 honoring Catherine DeGrina for more than 43 years of service as a telecommunications dispatcher for the city’s police, fire and emergency medical services.
Clerk (S3) read the resolution into the record, noting that DeGrina began as a communications dispatcher on Aug. 30, 1982, and will retire on March 19, 2026. The document credited her with mentorship of new dispatchers and sustained work across shifts, weekends and holidays. “Kathy served as the critical link between the public and first responders,” the resolution states.
Councilors spoke in praise. Mayor (S1) recalled an instance when DeGrina patiently assisted an elderly caller late at night and said that anecdote is “representative of the quiet dedication she has shown.” The council voted to place a copy of the resolution in the city’s permanent records and to transmit it to DeGrina.
No formal actions beyond adoption of the resolution were taken. The council moved promptly to other agenda business following the brief recognition.
