District report: Latino/a/x students are the largest English learner group (over 50%); Polynesian population growing

Assistant Superintendent Scott Carpenter presented the "English Learners in Oregon Annual Report 2023–2024" to the board on Sept. 10. Carpenter said the Latino/a/x group makes up the largest share of English learners in La Grande School District, at over 50 percent, and that the district has seen steady growth in its Polynesian student population.
Carpenter also reported continued growth in the district TAG (Talented and Gifted) program under TAG Specialist Ellen Lester. The board received the report as informational; the Integrated Guidance Budget later included related allocations for early literacy funding.
