Barre City Council unanimously ratifies Jan. 6 meeting actions in special session

The Barre City Council met in a properly warned special meeting at 12:05 p.m. on Jan. 7, 2026, to ratify actions taken at its Jan. 6 regular meeting. The Chair opened the session and explained the special meeting was called because the Jan. 6 forum had complied with Vermont open meeting laws but had not been published as required by the Barre City Charter.
"This is a ratification meeting," the Chair said as the agenda and consent items were read into the record. The consent agenda listed approval of the Dec. 16, 2025 minutes; no clerk's licenses or permits to approve; a letter of attestation for the Barre City Partnership Downtown Vibrancy Fund application; allocation of free holiday parking proceeds to recreation department programming; authorization to acquire a property at 143 North Main Street; and approval/ratification of warrants for multiple weeks.
A motion to accept the actions taken on Jan. 6 was moved by Councilor Guston and seconded by Councilor Spalding. The Chair conducted a roll-call vote and recorded affirmative votes for Councilor Bergeron, Councilor Guston, Councilor Spalding, Councilor Hillgarter and the Chair. "So the motion carries unanimously," the Chair said.
The Chair noted that, depending on the city attorney's determination, the city manager, the Chair, or Steve McKenzie may sign documents related to the property acquisition. The meeting then proceeded to adjourn after a separate motion and roll-call vote.
