La Grande School District No. 1 staff presented the 2024–25 Strategic Plan end-of-year report at the Aug. 27 special board meeting, citing improvements in literacy and graduation rates and identifying math as the primary focus for the coming year. Chelsea Hurliman told the board the district closed the year with "96% diplomas and a 98% completer rate including GED and 5th year students."
Assistant Superintendent Scott Carpenter and district staff described a districtwide rollout of interventions and staff training that contributed to reading gains. Madi Koenig and Monica West said staff-wide Science of Reading training, together with Eastern Oregon University reading tutors, led to "huge gains" in reading and that new first-grade students are starting the year reading on grade level. The report also flagged math as the main area for additional emphasis in 2025–26. The board will receive related follow-up metrics in regular reports going forward.
