A staff member briefed the Wallsburg Town Council on a state grant program with a maximum award of $600,000 and urged the town to prepare a detailed renovation plan for the town hall so it can apply.
"This 1 is a max of 600,000," the staff member said, adding that many grants provide 90% of funds up front and leave 10% until project completion. The staff member said the grant is administered through the governor's office and offered to circulate the application materials to the council.
Council members and staff agreed the building's two large rooms could be reconfigured with accordion partitions so the space could be rented separately, bolstering an application narrative that the project would increase local use and revenue. One council member said the town should assemble records of past rentals to demonstrate demand.
The staff member advised gathering engineering and cost estimates before finalizing the application, and recommended packaging ADA accessibility, restroom upgrades and emergency-preparedness functions (including a generator) into a single proposal. The council scheduled to pursue engineering quotes and to reconvene to produce a prioritized list of renovation elements.
The next procedural step is to obtain an engineer's assessment and a firm scope for the grant application; the staff member agreed to share the governor's office materials with the council.
