Principals report strong start to school year; district announces robotics competition and schedule change

School leaders reported overall positive starts to the school year at the Sept. 11 board meeting. McNary Heights Elementary Principal Nicole Coyle said, "It's been a fun start to the year," and Vice Principal Megan Lorence echoed that sentiment. Columbia Vista Intermediate Principal Tim Young described enthusiastic student participation at the new soccer field. Clara Brownell Middle School Principal Rick Cotterell praised staff response to a gas leak evacuation and noted a volleyball home opener. Umatilla High School Principal Bob Lorence and Vice Principal Oscar Contreras reported a first assembly and early success with a new phone policy; Vice Principal Contreras said the phone policy is "going better than he thought it would."
On district-level items, Superintendent Heidi Sipe announced that Umatilla School District will host a robotics competition on Oct. 12 and that the Oct. 9 board meeting will be moved to 6:00 p.m. so board members and staff can attend the football game. Business Manager Kim Gilsdorf said auditors are scheduled to arrive the following week, and David Lougee said he will submit a list of books proposed for weeding at the next board meeting.
The board recognized staff and community contributors, including the Umatilla Police Department and Umatilla Rural Fire Protection District, and added two thank-you cards to the district's acknowledgments list.
