County victim‑services leader to face VOCA audit; commissioners hear assault and DUI case updates

Crime Victim Advocate Laura Taylor provided the Meagher County commissioners with the office's annual Client Services Report and updates on casework at the Sept. 16 meeting.
Taylor said the department has handled a number of new assault cases, including incidents involving children, and noted several DUI cases linked to the recent Red Ants Pants Festival. "On September 25th, Taylor will meet with the Montana Board of Crime Control as they conduct an audit of her Victims of Crime Act (VOCA) grant," the minutes record. The audit will review financial records, services provided, and managed cases.
Chairman Ben Hurwitz emphasized that mental health challenges remain a significant concern in the county and discussed upcoming trial dates with Taylor. County Attorney Burt Hurwitz also entered the chambers and participated in discussion; he told commissioners he would research the Meagher County Funds Investment Policy Statement. Commissioners were additionally informed that a Fire Reorganization meeting is scheduled for Oct. 14, 2025.
The commission did not take separate action on the report; commissioners asked staff to continue monitoring case activity and to prepare for the forthcoming VOCA audit.
