County conservation says DOT bridge and DNR floodplain issues are complicating trail build

Nathan Jones, Jackson County conservation director, told the board the state DOT required a bridge adjacent to the mill that shifts alignment and constrains the trail layout. "It's gonna be fairly close, and Jaden probably has got a little more familiarity to that," Jones said while describing the required offset and site constraints.
Jones also described ongoing discussions with the state Department of Natural Resources about floodplain and water-crossing work. He said some cross drains are higher than expected and that the DNR may require staff to pull and regrade certain crossings to a different grade. "We got several emails and several calls with them, and we're getting there," Jones said, but he characterized the topic as unresolved and warned it could lead to change orders.
Board members and staff discussed potential responses, including retention areas or clean-outs to trap silt before it reaches the trail and obtaining stabilized stone pricing. Jones said the team is working to limit cost increases but acknowledged the possibility of needing additional funds or construction time to meet agency requirements.
