Macon County adopts 2007–08 budget, moves forward on courthouse repairs

The Macon County Commission adopted the proposed 2007–2008 budget during a Sept. 24, 2007 continuation meeting after a series of work sessions and public hearings. Commissioner Andrew D. Thompson moved to adopt the budget; the motion was seconded and carried unanimously.
Chairman Jesse L. Upshaw described the county's fiscal position as still constrained and urged continued, scheduled payments on the outstanding $400,000 loan rather than a single large payoff. "While the County is able to do some more thing perhaps that the County has not been able to do in the past, the County is not out of the woods yet," Upshaw told commissioners as they discussed cash-flow and capital priorities.
The adopted plan includes solicitation and preparatory work to renovate the courthouse and courthouse annex, with architects estimating approximately $2.0 million for repairs and a proposed additional $500,000 for a county maintenance shop. Commissioners authorized the solicitation of bids for those renovations contingent on funding and directed the chair and finance staff to move forward with identified capital projects. The county also kept the 3% across-the-board pay increase and the employer-paid health insurance changes in the FY2008 personnel budget as presented.
