District nurse outlines 'Stop the Bleed' kits and staff training funded by multiple grants

Christina Gavin, one of the district’s two school nurses, told trustees the district has placed Stop the Bleed kits in every classroom after securing several grants. Gavin listed grants from Panhandle Alliance for Education, the Northern Idaho Healthcare Coalition, the Bureau of EMS and Preparedness, and a local chapter of the National Rifle Association as funding sources for kits and supplies.

Gavin described kit contents — CAB‑certified tourniquets, glove sets, wound‑packing gauze and dressings — and said the supplies are designated for classrooms and should remain sealed until needed. She said the district is rolling out hands‑on training so “every single staff member” will practice applying tourniquets on training equipment and know how to simulate bleeding control. Trustees and the superintendent publicly acknowledged the nurse’s grant writing and implementation work.

The presentation emphasized safety and preparation rather than a prediction that the kits will be needed: Gavin said the aim is to have staff trained and supplies accessible so that if a bleeding emergency occurs students can be immediately supported.
