Elementary students showcase math intervention and school news projects to board
Summary
Students and staff from Marissa and Cooney Elementary presented a math intervention program (85% meeting fall‑to‑winter growth) and a student-run news program (KPN News) demonstrating student voice and leadership.
Trustees heard two in-person student presentations. A Marissa Elementary presenter introduced three math interventionists and reported that, "85 percent of our students made their fall to winter growth goal on their math assessment," and that 100% of students in the group showed growth on the district Acadience assessment. Students and staff described the intervention schedule and hands‑on instruction used to close math gaps.
Cooney Elementary principal Mrs. Bikandy introduced the KPN News program and several sixth‑grade students explained the project’s purpose: promoting school culture, sharing kind messages and celebrating student success. One student said, "The KPN news helps promote a positive school culture by sharing kind messages, celebrating teamwork, and showing what makes our school a great place to be." Board members praised the students’ confidence and encouraged continued classroom leadership opportunities.
Both presentations were accompanied by short videos and a demonstration; trustees and attendees applauded the students and thanked staff for supporting student voice.
