ISAT results mixed: ELA dips, math and science gains at Kootenai schools

Board heard ISAT comparisons showing a nearly 10-point drop in ELA at one junior–senior high but gains in math (about 9.4 points) and science (about 2.7 points); Harrison Elementary showed a 1.3-point ELA increase and a double-digit gain in science.
Superintendent (speaker 2) reviewed 2022–23 to 2023–24 ISAT score comparisons, telling trustees the district saw a mixed result across schools and subjects.
He reported Cooney junior–senior high ELA declined by "9.7%" to about "57%" while math rose by about "9.4%" and science rose "2.7%" to roughly "61%"—the superintendent attributed part of the ELA drop to staffing and midyear teaching changes. Harrison Elementary showed a 1.3-point ELA increase to about 70% and a significant science gain of 13 points to 63%, while math at Harrison fell to about 49% (a roughly 18-point decrease). Trustees connected these results to the district's PD efforts and new math curriculum at middle grades, which the superintendent credited for math gains.
The board said the data will guide focus areas for instruction and PD in the upcoming year.
