Jackson County conservation official says safety first after Spruce Creek storm damage

Chair Don Swankert opened the meeting and introduced Nate from county conservation, who gave the board an update on recent storm damage at Spruce Creek.
Nate reported multiple uprooted trees and site closures while crews wait for a bucket truck to finish cleanup. "Our goal is to get the roads open and safety first for everybody in the park," Nate said, adding that one tent was destroyed and a visitor had complained about the county's handling of the cleanup. He told the board his team discussed the complaint and that the caller appeared calmer after the board followed up.
Nate said the damage could have been worse had the storm hit during a busier holiday weekend and that staff focused on clearing roads and ensuring public safety. He acknowledged limits on staff capacity and that some visitors remain upset, and he invited supervisors to direct any questions to him as work continues.
