Engineer: Board approves permanent easements for Channelworth bridge project

The Jackson County Board of Supervisors on July 15 approved permanent easements tied to the Channelworth bridge replacement, clearing a path for final plan submission to the state Department of Transportation.
Jaden Schackl of the county engineer's office told the board the project requires permanent easements rather than fee purchases and that two property owners have agreed: Jerry and Amanda Leroy for 0.75 acres at $3,750, and Roger and Joyce Pete for 0.71 acres at $3,550. "They have agreed," Schackl said, summarizing negotiations. He explained the valuations used recent comparable sales in the floodplain and noted lower per-acre values there.
Schackl said check plans were submitted in early July and final plans will be submitted next month to meet the DOTs requirement that plans arrive three months before the letting. He said the county is on track for a November letting and hopes to begin winter demolition and substructure work so spring floodwaters do not delay construction. The board moved to approve the easements and recorded a voice vote, with the motion carrying.
