Hāna’s Wānanalua Church cleared for building‑only repairs after SHPD concurrence

The CRC reviewed a proposed set of building repairs for Wānanalua Congregational Church in Hāna and supported the work after staff and SHPD review.
Historic architect Katie Stephens described the scope as building‑only: roof replacement (wood shingle historically appropriate), steeple drainage repairs, limited exterior plaster repairs, window sash repairs and selective interior floor and wainscot repairs. No ground disturbance, plumbing or electrical work was proposed; Planning staff concluded repairs are consistent with preservation standards and recommended approval.
SHPD provided written concurrence (Dec. 19) that the project would have no historic‑property effects and the church will seek an SMA exemption because the work is limited to the building. The CRC voted to support staff’s recommendation.
