Chief Mirra outlines goals for the next generation of Leesburg firefighters

Fire Chief Joe Mirra reflected on his career path and what he wants for the department's future, telling Inside Leesburg that he began as a volunteer in 1995 and was hired by Leesburg in February 2002; he said he became chief in 2022. "I wanted to be a fireman...being a chief has probably been as equally or more rewarding," Mirra said.
Mirra said his goals for the next generation are pragmatic and cultural: maintain successful programs, amplify strengths, prioritize training and continue a culture centered on saving lives and property. "Continue what we're doing, take the good, amplify it, and just continue to create a culture that is focused on saving lives and property," he said.
The chief framed leadership as a way to influence the whole department and to pass traditions and training to newer members as the department moves beyond its 150th year.
