Fire Chief Joe Mirra told Inside Leesburg that the Leesburg Fire Department's geographic footprint has expanded dramatically since its early days as a small downtown volunteer force. "The city limits are over 25 square miles," he said, and through agreements with the county and neighboring agencies the department now assists across "almost 100 square miles."
Mirra said growth in population and interagency agreements drove the change, and he pointed to historic maps that show the city had two stations in the early 1900s, with City Hall originally housing the first station and nearby stables serving the horses that pulled early apparatus.
