County declares local disaster after June storms that left Marquette temporarily without power

Tim Hawkinson, assistant director of Emergency Management and Communications, read the proclamation aloud and said the storms caused widespread property damage and power outages in the town of Marquette; he noted one long-term care facility was operating on a generator and that the county had been collecting disaster-assessment information to share with the state. “Proclamation of state of local disaster emergency for McPherson County, Kansas,” Hawkinson read. The proclamation cited the county’s authority under state emergency-preparedness law as read into the record.
Hawkinson said some power was restored late Thursday night and that the Red Cross assisted with potential lodging needs; he also reported the county had distributed the state disaster-assessment form and would collect data for state reporting. The board approved the proclamation by voice vote; the proclamation remains effective for 14 days unless the board terminates or renews it.
