The Butler County Board on Jan. 13 authorized the Rescue Squad to solicit bids to replace a 2004 Ford F550 light‑duty/water rescue truck that has reached the end of recommended rebuilds and has experienced multiple breakdowns while responding to calls.
Emergency Medical Services Director Frank Williams told commissioners the 2004 truck has 38,880 miles and 1,532 chassis hours (equivalent to about 61,280 miles), has responded to more than 5,000 calls over 21 years and currently uses a mix of aged equipment including a 1991 gas‑powered extrication tool set. The volunteer vehicle committee proposed specifications that include the vehicle plus an upgraded 800 MHz mobile radio, portable battery lights and new battery‑powered extrication tools; staff estimated the complete replacement package at $285,000.
Commissioner Kelly Herzet moved to solicit bids for the replacement vehicle and return recommendations to the commission; Commissioner Jeff Masterson seconded and the motion carried 5‑0. The board did not award a purchase contract and directed staff to solicit competitive bids prior to returning with recommendations.
