A proposed ordinance to set equal general-fund appropriations for the Tullahoma Sports Council, South Jackson Civic Center and the Tullahoma Area Chamber of Commerce drew sharp debate about priorities, restricted funds and whether taxpayer dollars were best used to support outside organizations.
Alderman Toma and others urged caution, saying the city had denied funds for internal departments and should prioritize police and fire staffing before increasing external grants. "If you add this up, it's about two police officers," one alderman said, asking whether the allocations were the right use of taxpayers' money. Supporters said the organizations bring tourists, hotel room nights and quality-of-life benefits and argued equal funding provides stability these groups can use to attract grants and lending. The board voted to call the question and then took a board vote that will continue the discussion at one or more future meetings to allow staff time to calculate fiscal impacts and to enable additional study sessions.
