Public works expands fuel‑island conduit repairs after rust and exposed wiring discovered

Public works staff updated the commission June 22 about an expanded repair at the county fuel island after crews uncovered multiple rusted conduits and exposed wiring during excavation.
Mike (S11), speaking for public works, said crews initially planned to replace a single conduit but found many more corroded runs and exposed wiring when they opened a second trench. “When we excavated around the corner...we found several conduits that have rusted through with exposed wires,” he said. The crew increased scope to replace about six conduits, upgrading conduit size from 3/4" to 1" and laying extra 2" conduit for future needs. The work is expected to take about a week and a half and is being done primarily by county crews, which staff said will postpone a larger $1,000,000 fuel‑system replacement while keeping the fleet functional.
Staff noted the project will require minor additional materials (steel conduits, sump surrounds, concrete and asphalt restoration) but can be completed largely in‑house to limit budget impact. The board and staff discussed access around the site and traffic/parking during repairs.
