The Union SD 5 Board approved an updated athletic code of conduct and a spectator code of conduct after discussion on how to reduce disruptive behavior at school events. Board Chair (speaker 2) led the motions and the board recorded affirmative votes during roll call.
Board members had earlier debated enforcement mechanisms for incidents involving parents at contests. Superintendent Carter said staff would require coach meetings and a spectator contract, while allowing flexibility for unusual cases. Carter noted the district would offer several options: in-person nights, virtual sessions, or a recorded meeting with an emailed verification form so working parents can comply. "This Zoom was a great idea," Carter said when presenting possible virtual options for parents.
Supporters said coach-led confirmation and follow-up contact could increase compliance without excluding students from play unnecessarily; one member suggested barring parents from contests in extreme cases while still allowing the child to participate. The board moved to adopt the codes and to proceed with the established verification options and coach communications, with administrators tasked to implement outreach and follow-up for parents who cannot attend scheduled sessions.
