Suzanne Nardi described the lithium-ion fire blanket as a critical safety component for collection sites, saying that battery fires are difficult to extinguish with water or standard extinguishers and that blankets prioritize containment.
"Blankets are designed for containment. They do not necessarily put out the fire, but prevent it from spreading," Nardi said, and she advised first steps: evacuate the area, call emergency services, shake and unfold the blanket, drape it over the burning bucket, and press edges to minimize air intake. Nardi said battery fires can reignite for hours or days and that the blanket is single-use and must be replaced after deployment. She said she will give a live demonstration on using the blanket when meeting in person.
NLR framed these products as part of preventing local emergencies, recovering recyclable materials, and protecting staff and residents.
