Sheriff reports Marine Patrol hire, 2026 opioid grant window and $3,000 jail washer repair estimate

Sheriff Ryan Swope updated the board on law enforcement staffing and operational matters, saying John Pratt has been hired for Marine Patrol and that the Opioid Steering Committee’s grant application for 2026–2027 is open and closes June 30. He reported the Junior Deputy Program at Crawford AuSable School for fourth-graders finished last week and reminded the board that the Law Enforcement Memorial Ceremony is scheduled May 15 at noon in the sheriff’s department parking lot.
Swope told the board the door latch to the jail washing machine is broken and estimated repair costs at $3,000; he said he is also considering replacement options. He also reported an agreement with Kent County to monitor a suspect in an attempted murder charge who is expected to be housed in the Crawford County Jail in the coming weeks.
