Berrien County Health Department staff reported at the Jan. 7 Sewage Appeals Board meeting that two separate soil borings on Nov. 3 and Nov. 19, 2025, found the seasonal water table at approximately 18 inches below grade on the property at 2887 Coloma Rd. Environmental Health Registered Sanitarian Chris Nagy conducted the initial borings and relayed findings to the property owners.
Because the water table was shallow in the sampled locations, BCHD staff and the board considered a raised 'Allegan Mound' system to provide suitable absorption distance for a four-bedroom home. The borings were repeated with the consultant on Nov. 19, 2025, to sample an alternate area of the parcel; those borings produced the same approximate depth reading and informed the board’s conditional approval.
BCHD staff noted that mound construction must occur during favorable/dry conditions and that the absorption field and reserve must be protected from compaction; those conditions were incorporated into the board’s approval.
