Commissioners vote 3–2 to advertise Wellness Way landscaping ordinance amid objections

The Lake County Board of County Commissioners voted to advertise a proposed ordinance for the Wellness Way area after more than an hour of debate on July 22. Supporters said the revised standards reflect years of planning tied to water-conservation needs in the area and to joint standards adopted with the city of Clermont; opponents said the ordinance amounts to government overreach and could impose burdensome costs and new enforcement duties on the county.
"I just wanna say again that I truly believe this is government overreach," Commissioner Smith said during discussion, citing detailed soil-amendment and tree-requirement language he said would be costly and difficult to enforce. Supporters replied that the ordinance was developed over a decade with developers and is intended to ensure higher-quality, water-conscious development in the Wellness Way corridor. After debate, the board voted to advertise the ordinance for public hearing; the chair said the board will accept further input before the adoption hearing.
Board members also agreed that advertising the ordinance starts a formal public-review period: if approved for advertisement, the ordinance will return for public hearings and possible amendments, and staff said stakeholders including the Home Builders Association received the draft for review.
