Resident urges stricter roadside-sign rules as committee advances rewritten policy

A member of the public, Mike Way of Summit Township, told the committee he supported updates to policy 83-50 to reduce the proliferation of signs stuck to telephone poles and at major intersections. "It's a poor first impression for our community," Way said, adding that clustered signs near the Airport Road corridor are worn and create a messy entry for visitors.

Commissioners discussed the draft policy, which is a complete rewrite of the previous one. Several commissioners asked the staff to add practical navigation to the fee schedule and clarify who citizens should contact to submit sign requests. Those amendment motions failed for lack of support, but the committee ultimately voted 4–1 to forward the new policy to the full board with a recommendation of approval. The committee did not include a year-specific fee schedule in the policy because the fee schedule is updated annually under the budget, but commissioners asked staff to make the fee schedule easier to find.

The committee debate also focused on a section that allows political sign removal "at the sole discretion of the county." One commissioner proposed replacing the vague phrase with an explicit reference to Jackson County Department of Transportation; that motion also died for lack of a second. The committee chair moved the draft forward to the full board for final action.
