County clerk outlines election security, records digitization and staffing strains

County Clerk Sierra Sol delivered the clerk’s semiannual report, highlighting election security, public-records digitization and training priorities. “We continue to ensure secure, accurate, and transparent elections while maintaining public confidence in that process,” she said, noting the May election ran smoothly and canvass work was nearly complete.
Sol told the committee the office has improved election equipment physical security and made results ADA-compliant in real time; the office is back-scanning records and updating statewide forms, including a revised marriage-license form she said Jackson County helped redesign. She reported a jury-on-call reduction from 370 to 270 per week and a staff turnover rate of 19.23% in 2025, which she called a recruiting and continuity challenge. Commissioner Pulaski asked whether the state would fund new election systems; Sol said she was coordinating with the Michigan Association of County Clerks and the state budget process to pursue funding, adding the county could expect minor local costs for computers and software.
