Merced County health officer announces leadership change as public-health updates given

Dr. Ignacio Santana introduced himself to the committee and provided a brief infectious-disease update. County public-health staff briefly opened a Department Operations Center in response to H5N1 activity and have since closed it; there have been no documented person-to-person H5N1 infections. Sandoval said influenza cases in the county are resulting in more deaths than COVID-19 at present; the report also noted two cases of pertussis in people who were vaccinated and referenced a prior death attributed to rabies.
