Council members set a walk-through and community planning schedule to prepare a building-remodel grant application, with the consultant meeting set for Feb. 27 at 9 a.m. The council intends to use an open house to gather public input and then work with an architect to produce plans to include in the grant application due by September.
Members emphasized accessibility and emergency readiness as grant priorities. One council member noted the building is an unreinforced brick structure and said ADA improvements and emergency-shelter capability are major considerations. A councilor said of the grant ask, “I told her we want like 1000000 bucks,” indicating the council is considering a full-scale scope; several members recommended prioritizing a bathroom remodel first because it can be done within the current building footprint and supports community events and power needs.
Councilors also discussed procurement preferences to hire local contractors and the possibility of using FEMA or other grant-match options for emergency upgrades. Staff will notify the public about the walk-through and open house and will return with cost estimates at the next working meeting.
