The Baltimore County Department of Aging announced it has reframed its annual event formerly known as “No Senior Eats Alone” to “Engage: A Day of Sharing Meals and Building Connections,” while maintaining the event’s mission of reducing social isolation among older adults.
Director Young Tan said the change reflects a strengths-based, community-centered approach developed with the Baltimore County Commission on Aging and designed to recognize older adults as valued community members. "Engage is still focused ... on reducing social isolation, supporting well-being, helping older adults stay connected," Tan said, adding the county will coordinate the day with partners across departments and community organizations.
Organizers said the county’s police, fire and EMS personnel will help deliver meals and make friendly visits to residents who cannot leave their homes, and public libraries and 21 senior centers will host gatherings. Director Tan encouraged faith-based groups, restaurants and senior housing communities to participate. The department listed Thursday, Sept. 10, as the day of the event and urged residents to check the BCDA website for local events and volunteer opportunities.
Host Ethel Rasmussen noted the reframing emphasizes positive action and connection rather than vulnerability. The broadcast closed with Director Tan saying he expected to be out in the community serving meals and visiting senior centers during the event.
