The City Council voted to participate in a Johnson County Transit circulator planned for World Cup 26 in the Kansas City region, approving an agreement that authorizes a Merriam stop at Merriam Town Center. Mr. Engel said the program is branded "Johnson County United" and that the county approved funding at the Board of County Commissioners level.
"Total cost is $5,700,000," Mr. Engel said. He outlined the funding breakdown: about $2,880,000 in existing federal transit grant dollars, $1,500,000 from the Kansas Department of Transportation, $920,000 in county transit funds, and roughly $400,000 to be split among participating cities. "The city's projected portion to effectively have a park and ride stop in Merriam is $8,248," he said.
Council discussion focused on branding and logistics; staff said exact routes, stop locations, and hours are still being finalized by Johnson County Transit. The motion to approve Merriam's participation passed on a unanimous vote (8-0).
