Hacienda La Puente Unified board votes to place term‑limits measure on Nov. 3 ballot

The Hacienda La Puente Unified School District Board of Education voted July 28 to adopt a resolution proposing limits on the number of terms board members may serve and to place the measure on the November 3, 2026 statewide ballot.

The motion to rescind and replace the prior resolution and adopt the 2026‑27 measure was moved by Trustee Serrano and seconded by Trustee Dela Torre. After discussion about accountability and the need for turnover, the board recorded three yes votes and two absences and the presiding officer declared the measure approved for placement on the ballot. "This is such an important thing in our community," Trustee Serrano said, urging voters to consider accountability and teamwork. Trustee Dela Torre said term limits encourage "fresh ideas and new leadership."

Supporters who spoke during public comment repeatedly urged the board to act. Sam Brown, who listed campaign records as an example of why turnover matters, said the proposal was meant "to recognize that extended incumbency can concentrate political influence" but added he was "not saying that anything improper took place." Manuel Maldonado told the board his long experience in the district motivated his support for term limits, saying the community had suffered from past misconduct.

The board's approval begins the process of transmitting the adopted resolution to the county elections official and placing the measure on the county ballot for the Nov. 3, 2026 election. The board did not adopt the final ballot language at this meeting; staff were directed to transmit the resolution and related documents to Los Angeles County for consolidation and election services.
