Residents urge guardrail on steep G Street slope; public works to study options

A long-standing safety concern at the bottom of G Street drew public comment when resident Steve Weller described a steep grade that becomes dangerously slick in winter and asked the council to install a guardrail or other barrier to prevent vehicles from plunging into a ravine near the city water plant.
"I would just like to say on behalf of even our neighborhood and the people who live on the street, a simple guardrail," Weller said, describing repeated instances where the slope and recent asphalt made the runout risk greater.
Public works staff said engineers are developing options but that the site’s right-of-way, the carved bank and the location of the water line make a simple installation difficult. Staff said they are working on designs that would actually stop a vehicle without creating additional hazards and will return with options.
Council directed staff to continue work on guardrail options and keep residents informed.
