A request to purchase Dodge Durango SUVs (with emergency equipment) for county departments prompted several council members to press for stronger fleet management and to remove the item from the consent agenda for further review.
A county official described criteria used for replacement—vehicle age, mileage and repair cost—and said many county vehicles currently have more than 200,000 miles. Councilwoman Reuther and others said they have long requested a formal fleet-management policy and a complete inventory to improve transparency and budgeting. "We still don't have it," one council member said, urging that the county complete the written policy recommended in a 2023 fleet audit.
The presenting official said policy drafts exist and staff can provide lists and repair histories. Council members agreed the vehicles are needed but asked that the item be pulled from the consent agenda for additional discussion tomorrow. Staff acknowledged the request and agreed to provide additional information and to finalize policy drafts in coordination with the comptroller's office.
