ODOT begins survey work for Safe Routes to Schools Phase 2; city and ODOT to evaluate best sidewalk alignment

City staff introduced Phase 2 of the Safe Routes to Schools project, which will extend improvements on Main Avenue/OR‑104 toward the high school. Charlotte Berghofer, the ODOT project manager, said the team is early in design and has begun surveying both sides of the roadway to determine where sidewalks, ramps, crosswalks and lighting will best improve pedestrian safety.
Berghofer explained the design team wants flexibility to evaluate each side of the road: "We're really wanting to look at both sides where we put the sidewalk improvements," she said, noting ODOT had initially developed conceptual drawings for the west side but field conditions and crossing visibility near the high school may make the east side preferable in stretches. The team emphasized coordination with city drainage work to avoid creating unforeseen flooding or sidewalk impacts.
Staff and ODOT said they will coordinate with the city on right‑of‑way, stop‑sign placement and property owner offers to refine intersection geometry at 9th Street. Commissioners welcomed the project and asked staff to monitor drainage impacts as design proceeds.
