Oxford House resident addresses commission, urges peaceful coexistence with neighbors

Aaron Oakes, a resident of a recently opened Oxford House, introduced his house and explained the recovery-house model to the commission. He said the Oregon law allows eviction within 24 hours if a resident relapses, and described member screening and house rules that exclude convicted sex offenders or arsonists. “We really are a place for people who are currently sober to maintain their sobriety away from drugs, alcohol, any of that kind of influence,” Oakes said.
Oakes acknowledged neighborhood concerns — particularly parking and mailbox issues — and said the house is seeking solutions and wants to be a peaceful neighbor. Commissioners thanked him for coming, noted previous difficulties getting an organization representative to speak, and expressed appreciation for face-to-face outreach as part of ongoing neighborhood conversations.
