Warrenton declares 247 Taiz Street a nuisance, gives owner 30 days to clean up

Code Compliance Officer Christian Salinas presented photographic evidence and an account of repeated noncompliance at 247 Taiz Street, saying the property “has numerous inoperable vehicles... scrap wood, metal, propane tanks, appliances, and there is a damaged boat filled with debris.” Salinas told the commission he first took the violation in November 2023 and observed no meaningful remediation at the site during a site visit the morning of the hearing.

The property owner, identified in the staff report as Marie Mejiau, told the commission she had family and housing disruptions — including the death of an adult son and temporary displacement — and said she has been working to clean and secure the property. Commissioners pressed for a practical remediation plan, suggested VIN checks to identify vehicle owners and noted options including dumpster rental or lien procedures to remove abandoned trailers and motor homes. Commissioner Dyer advised obtaining VINs and sending legal notices to owners as a first enforcement step.

After discussion the commission moved, seconded and voted to declare the property a nuisance, provide a 30‑day timetable for substantial improvement and return to the commission for a penalty hearing if adequate progress is not shown. The code compliance officer will provide the owner with the relevant municipal code citations in writing and staff will monitor progress; the commission noted fines may be waived if the owner's timely progress is documented.
