Superintendent: Aspen Institute grant awarded; eight international teachers to join dual-language program

During his superintendent’s report, Dr. Parker said the district was accepted into a three-year grant funded by the Aspen Institute to help expand access to International Baccalaureate coursework and study social and economic mobility. “We along with, I believe, five other North Carolina rural school districts ... were just admitted into a 3 year grant that's funded by the Aspen Institute,” he said.
Dr. Parker also announced that eight international teachers are arriving this week to support the district’s Spanish dual-language immersion program; staff have coordinated housing and donations to welcome the new teachers. He provided staffing and calendar details: teacher optional workday is August 11, the required convocation day is August 12, and most students return August 24. Parker said teaching vacancies have dropped to "singular digits" and district administrative positions are fully staffed.
Board members thanked staff for summer hiring efforts and outreach. The superintendent said the Aspen work will be integrated with advanced-course access and the district’s International Baccalaureate programs at middle and high schools.
