Parks staff outline goals for partnerships, events and senior services

Parks and recreation staff presented a progress update to the Sandy Parks & Recreation Advisory Board on departmental goals ranging from facility partnerships to special events and senior services.

John, a parks staff member, said the department’s first interdepartmental goal is strengthening a partnership with the Oregon Trail School District to secure facility space for youth programs and to streamline scheduling among community users. “So our 1st interdepartmental goal is to improve partnership with Oregon Trail School District for use of facility space for youth programs,” John said, describing a coordinated calendar process to reduce conflicts among user groups.

Staff also outlined goals to grow special events while meeting cost-recovery targets. John highlighted WinterFest, Mountain Storm and smaller activations such as Yappy Hour as programs that both engage residents and help generate revenue. He said organizers are planning a two-day skateboard and bike competition at Cedar Park intended to draw regional competitors while remaining open to Sandy residents.

On senior services, John described the department’s mix of state and federal grant funding that supports Meals on Wheels, congregate dining, transportation and case management. He said the senior center signed up for Meals on Wheels America this fiscal year to access additional grant opportunities and information, noting the $250 annual subscription fee.
