Board adopts grade-10 ethnic studies curriculum after pilot and edits

The board voted to adopt a grade-10 ethnic studies curriculum that district staff said was built from the state’s adopted-model materials and refined after a local pilot. The superintendent told trustees a community objection to one obscure resource was addressed before the material reached students: "We were able to ameliorate that pretty quickly, remove the objectionable content," the superintendent said, and the committee recommended adding more resources to support indigenous populations when the statewide Model Native American studies materials are published in September.
Trustees discussed the need for professional development for teachers and continued community engagement, including outreach to local indigenous groups. Board members emphasized that the locally controlled curriculum can be adjusted and updated as teachers identify additional resources; the board approved Resolution 25–11 to adopt the curriculum by roll call.
