The Cameron County parks committee approved a construction certificate and dune-protection permit application for EK Atwood Park (Beach Access Number 5), a Restore Act–funded project that will renovate restrooms, provide new changing stations, refurbish toll booths and resurface the parking area with permeable pavers.
Augusto described the scope: "upgrade the restrooms, build new changing stations, and refurbished... the parking lot" and said the project will remain within the current footprint and will not impact dunes. Staff noted one challenge: a low soffit at a toll booth that has been struck by tall vehicles previously and will be raised.
A committee member asked whether construction lies seaward of the building setback line; staff said parts of the construction are partially seaward but, because dunes are unaffected, the permit qualified for approval. The committee moved, seconded and approved the permit during the meeting.
