County staff described a proposed beach-and-dune monitoring program that would use drones equipped with LIDAR to scan the shoreline periodically and measure dune morphology and sediment loss.
"We want to establish a beach and dune monitoring program for South Padre Island using, drones with lidar technology," Augusto said, adding that periodic scans would show shoreline changes after major events and quantify sand loss. Staff said the county hopes to build in-house GIS capacity to run and store the data so it is available to the public and academia.
Staff also said monitoring data could help quantify sediment loss for FEMA declarations and reimbursement. Augusto noted the county expects some state and federal funding windows to open in the next fiscal cycle and that identifying sand sources offshore or in the ship channel is part of a broader erosion-response plan.
