Board votes to postpone K–12 health (including sexuality) curriculum adoption to 2025–26

District curriculum staff recommended the board postpone the scheduled adoption of K–12 health instructional materials, including sexuality education, until the 2025–26 school year so new materials would be in classrooms in fall 2026. Dr. Swoisan explained that curriculum adoption is a multi‑year process that includes professional learning and that recent adoptions (literacy, math, science) and budget constraints made the later adoption preferable this year.
The staff clarified that required Oregon Department of Education opioid and fentanyl prevention lessons will be implemented this year with professional learning for teachers and that the current 2022 comprehensive sexuality education plan will remain in force until new materials are adopted. "That does not mean that there's any changes in those pieces," Dr. Swoisan said.
A board member moved to postpone adoption and another seconded; directors described the decision as a response to teacher workload, budget realities and the pace of professional learning. The motion passed by board vote.
The board’s next steps include scheduling the adoption process in 2025–26 and ensuring professional learning is in place before classroom use in fall 2026.
