During the July 21 Braintree BCA meeting, Chair Jesse Kasha reviewed changes to the town's checklist/roster, saying he mailed notices to 27 people to verify residency and received one response confirming residence. He said he added those whose addresses matched DMV records and removed one person, Vern Dufus.
"I sent it out to, like, 27 people, and I got 1 back saying I actually live here," Kasha said. He warned that the board cannot remove people from the checklist within 60 days of an election, citing timing constraints and the need to follow the relevant law as written in the meeting. He described plans to circulate the list for review outside an election year to clean up records further.
Committee members asked whether and how the list could be pruned; Kasha said he plans to send the checklist to members for review when not in an election year and to issue challenge letters when property ownership changes. He also remarked, informally, that federal removal processes are cumbersome: "...you have to, like, go through an act act of congress and give up your firstborn to remove anybody from the freaking list," a remark reflecting frustration rather than a legal citation.
The meeting did not include a legal citation for the 60-day constraint; the transcript records the timeline and the board's operational plan to pursue cleanup outside the election window.
