Commissioners adopt new transfer-station policy; ban on industrial grain tarps unless cut

The policy clarifies removal and acceptance criteria and specifically requires that industrial grain tarps be cut into manageable sections (6 feet or smaller) before the county will accept them at the transfer station. "I make a motion then that we adopt these items, the language in the email for a new policy at the solid waste or the transfer station and make it effective immediately," the chair said before the board voted.
Commissioners also reviewed operational details including a tire-cutting program (passenger tires are processed more quickly; semi tires present different handling costs) and approved the transfer-station tonnage report. Staff indicated the passenger-tire disposal fee is $5 per tire and recommended periodic review of disposal fees to ensure the program does not operate at a loss. The board requested staff to return with any necessary implementation details and inventory accounting for equipment needs such as a tire cutter or additional staffing.
